Conservation Strategy Fund helps local conservationists use economic tools to find smart, efficient solutions to the most urgent environmental problems. Since its creation in 1998, CSF has conducted dozens of analysis projects in forests, rivers and coastal environments. Most of our work has focused in the tropics, where extraordinarily high levels of biological diversity are found. To maximize the reach and quality of our work, we involve leading experts and conservation organizations in all of our projects.

Forest restoration business analysis in Amazonas state, Brazil

CSF-Brazil, in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF-Brazil), conducted a feasibility study of economically promising forest restoration business models for private investment in southern Amazonas (AM) state, Brazil.

The New York Declaration on Forests, launched at the UN Climate Summit 2014, established a goal of restoring 350 million hectares of forest worldwide by 2030, to support climate change mitigation. However, mobilizing funding from the private sector to address the finance gap to achieve Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) at scale has proven an enormous challenge.

Developing a Green Regency in the Heart of Borneo: Sustainable Landscape Planning in Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan

With the rise of jurisdictional approaches to sustainable commodity sourcing and pressure to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, a number of regencies and provinces in Indonesia have taken steps to embrace sustainable and low-carbon development plans. CSF is supporting the government and stakeholders in Sintang Regency to collectively design and implement a Green Regency plan that includes sustainable land use practices and better governance. We are contributing expertise in economics, sustainable development, and strategic planning, and working closely with the local government, who are overseeing the process with the support from local government and civil society organizations (CSOs) .

What do fishermen truly stand to lose from the creation of large MPAs? Comparing claims with actual economic costs

CSF is investigating the fishing-related opportunity costs of existing large-scale marine protected areas (MPAs) using Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) and Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument (PRI) as case studies. Specifically, CSF is working to evaluate the extent to which fishing regulations have been implemented at each MPA.

Evaluating the economic, social and environmental costs of planned road projects in the Amazon Basin

With generous support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, CSF is working on a project to identify the relative riskiness of planned road projects in terms of economic, social and environmental costs in the Amazon basin, and to engage decision makers to ensure that this analysis is relevant, understood and to the greatest extent possible considered in decision-making processes.

Guidelines for USAID on integrating ecosystem service values into cost-benefit analysis

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is among the largest international development agencies worldwide. One of the tools USAID uses to select, design, and improve programming is cost-benefit analysis (CBA). As part of the USAID BRIDGE (Biodiversity Results and Integrated Development Gains Enhanced) project, the USAID Office of Forestry and Biodiversity is exploring the use of ecosystem service valuations in Agency CBAs.

Promoting the Brazilian native vegetation conservation: Recommendations for Environmental Reserve Quotas (CRAs) Implementation

CSF-Brazil conducted a study on Environmental Reserve Quotas (Portuguese acronym CRAs) implementation in Maranhão state (MA) and opportunities in the states of Bahia (BA) and Tocantins (TO). The study aimed to support MA in the CRAs market implementation and to promote dialogue and sharing of experiences among MA, BA and TO. The ultimate goal of the study is to promote ecosystems and forest conservation in a more economically efficient and environmentally sound way in the Amazon, Cerrado and Caatinga Brazilian biomes.

CSF-Brazil completed a study of the local tourism demand in Mato Grosso (MT) state to support the development of sustainable tourism in Indigenous Lands (ILs) of the Juruena river basin.

Supporting the territorial management of a conservation unit in the Brazilian Amazon

CSF-Brazil - in partnership with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Agency of Amapá (EMBRAPA-AP), the Brazilian Environment Ministry (MMA) and the German Cooperation Agency in Brazil (GIZ) - has completed a study addressing the relationship between Ecosystem Services (ESs) and the development of extractive products value chains focused on the Environmental Protection Area of the Fazendinha (Fazendinha APA) located in southern Macapá municipality, Amapá state (AM), Brazil. We identified valuable information to support the APA's future Management Plan. Overall, the study aims to promote sustainable livelihoods in the Brazilian Amazon.

Supporting Fishery Resource Conservation and the Artisanal Fishery Value Chain in the Brazilian Amazon: Analysis of the Community Management and Sales of Pirarucu

CSF-Brazil, in partnership with Native Amazon Operation (OPAN), completed an analysis of the community management and sales of the pirarucu fish caught in 21 protected areas (PAs) and 10 Areas of Fisheries Agreements in the state of Amazonas (AM), Brazil.

Socio-environmental Compensation of Impacts of dams in the Brazilian Amazon: A Review of Legal and Economic Aspects of Indemnity Programs

CSF-Brazil has launched our publication "Indemnification of Hydroelectric Power Plants Projects: A Legal, Economic, and Empirical Review". The study's objective is to: 1) provide information that strengthens actions seeking fair compensation and indemnization for communities affected by dams; and information for the design of compensation programs that meets the communities' vision of the future; and 2) spread awareness of the socio-environmental impacts of large infrastructure projects in the Amazon to society.
