Funding Guide for Protected Area Management and Implementation at the Municipal-level in Brazil

CSF-Brazil is developing a guide on fundraising and funding strategies for the management and implementation of municipal level protected areas in Brazil.

Protected areas play a crucial role in safeguarding ecosystems and wildlife, and reducing habitat fragmentation. At a local level, protected areas provide essential services like fresh drinking water, protection against natural disasters, and leisure spaces. However, governments often struggle to secure enough funding to establish and manage these areas.

Comparative Analysis of Conservation Agreement Programs in the Amazon

CSF is working on a research and capacity building project for the World Bank to increase effectiveness of government-run conservation agreement and payment for ecosystem services (PES) programs in the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes (ASL) Program region.

Despite the potential for conservation agreements and PES mechanisms to make conservation attractive to landowners, program characteristics that efficiently deliver avoided deforestation and related goals are still not consistently included in program design.

Feasibility Analysis for Conservation Agreements in Pilón Lajas Biosphere Reserve and Communal Lands Watersheds

CSF is evaluating the feasibility of conservation agreements to guarantee the protection of the Pilón Lajas Biosphere Reserve and Communal Lands watersheds in Bolivia. Through consultation workshops with various stakeholders, we will consider different financial mechanisms and make recommendations on the best model to be implemented in Pilón Lajas. If we find that conservation agreements are feasible in this area, we will seek to work on the final design and implementation.

Background

We are contributing expertise in economics, sustainable development, and strategic planning, and working closely with the local government, who are overseeing the process with the support from local government and civil society organizations (CSOs) .

What do fishermen truly stand to lose from the creation of large MPAs? Comparing claims with actual economic costs

CSF is investigating the fishing-related opportunity costs of existing large-scale marine protected areas (MPAs) using Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM) and Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument (PRI) as case studies. Specifically, CSF is working to evaluate the extent to which fishing regulations have been implemented at each MPA.
