This project is a strategic partnership to expand the applied use of CSF’s Mining Impacts Calculator in efforts to combat illegal mining across the Amazon. It focuses on integrating CSF’s impact valuation methodology into digital monitoring platforms, enabling spatial monitoring data to be translated, in near real time, into quantitative estimates of environmental and social damage that can inform governments, civil society organizations, and other key actors.
CSF is responsible for designing and implementing the technical integration architecture, adapting its platform to communicate via an API, documenting endpoints, and ensuring system testing, validation, and reliability. This integration allows the Mining Impacts Calculator to function as an automated engine for socio-environmental impact estimation within the Amazon Conservation Association’s monitoring tool, the Amazon Mining Watch platform. The work is carried out in collaboration with ACA, combining CSF’s analytical framework with complementary data, and visualizations, supported by technical capacity-building to ensure the system can be effectively used and maintained over time.
By embedding economic and socio-environmental impact valuation directly into monitoring and enforcement-oriented platforms, the project helps transform data into actionable evidence. It strengthens the ability of institutions to understand and respond to the real costs of illegal mining, supports more informed and timely decision-making, and positions the Mining Impacts Calculator as a scalable and replicable analytical infrastructure for applied environmental economics in the Amazon and beyond.
