Conserva Aves is a regional initiative led by Audubon, BirdLife International, American Bird Conservancy, and RedLAC, with Fondo Acción serving as the operator in Colombia. The initiative supports the creation and strengthening of subnational protected and conserved areas while helping ensure their long-term financial sustainability and promoting sustainable development opportunities for local communities. In Colombia, many emerging conservation areas and local organizations face the challenge of securing stable, sufficient, and diversified resources to support effective management over time. This project responds to that need by helping local Conserva Aves partners move from conservation priorities to practical financial sustainability strategies that can be implemented in their specific institutional, ecological, and socioeconomic contexts. Led by CSF, the work provides technical support to Fondo Acción and participating local organizations to develop financial sustainability plans and implementation roadmaps for new conservation areas. The process begins with a diagnostic and pre-analysis of each organization’s progress, capacities, financial gaps, governance conditions, and existing or potential revenue-generating opportunities. Based on this analysis, CSF will help identify and prioritize viable financial mechanisms that are technically, socially, and financially appropriate for each conservation area. The project also includes a capacity-building component designed to strengthen local partners’ skills in financial planning, financial-gap analysis, mechanism prioritization, risk assessment, and sustainable business model development. Through virtual and/or in-person workshops, practical exercises, and participatory ideation sessions, CSF will support partners in co-creating financial strategies that are grounded in local realities and aligned with conservation objectives. The final outputs will include financial sustainability plans, implementation roadmaps, socialization materials, and a consolidated final report summarizing key results, lessons learned, and recommendations. By combining financial analysis, participatory planning, and institutional capacity building, the project aims to equip local conservation organizations with clearer pathways to mobilize resources, strengthen long-term management, and support durable conservation outcomes for Colombia’s new Conserva Aves areas.
