This May, CSF Indonesia formalized our partnership with Halu Oleo University, Kendari, one of the leading universities in the Southeast Sulawesi Province in Indonesia. In our efforts to support the Blue Economy implementation in the eastern part of Indonesia, Halo Oleo University is one of our most strategic partners as they have a strong partnership with the Kendari Ocean Fishing Port (PPS Kendari) which is the second largest and most important fishing port in the country. This collaboration will be a great opportunity for both CSF Indonesia and Halu Oleo University to establish a foundation for the Blue Economy implementation.

Welcomed by the Rector and his team, CSF Indonesia’s Director Dr. Mubariq Ahmad shared his valuable experience and vision to further improve Marine and Fisheries in the Southeast Sulawesi Province in the context of implementing the blue economy.

“One of the government's priorities in the context of implementing the blue economy is supporting the development and conservation of small islands in coastal areas. It is hoped that with this collaboration Halu Oleo University will be at the forefront of environmental management in Southeast Sulawesi, CSF Indonesia will come to support,” said Dr. Mubariq Ahmad, CSF Indonesia’s Director.

One of our Groundwork Analysis and Course Alumni, La Ode Muhammad Yasir Haya, was present at this officiating meeting. His knowledge of CSF Indonesia’s work from his time in our capacity-building programs made this partnership possible. Yasir Haya shared the impact of our capacity building on his research in Kendari Ocean Fishing Port (PPS Kendari) with his colleagues at Halu Oleo and the CSF team was welcomed by the Haluoleo University’s Rector Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zamrun Fihiru with open arms and optimism.

“We at Halu Oleo University, Kendari will work with anyone, as it is to bring out the good values to Southeast Sulawesi, this cooperation will focus on the environment. So later there will be communication with CSF Indonesia, and there will be research, dissemination, and training related to conservation. Of course, through this collaboration, we hope that Haluoleo University, Kendari will come to support its activities in the future.” said Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zamrun Fihiru the Rector of Halu Oleo University.

In the upcoming months, our collaboration with Halu Oleo University will produce programs within two priority areas in the Southeast Sulawesi Province, one will be the sustainable implementation of a Blue Economy plan, and the other will be an adaptation of CSF Mining Impacts Calculator to help the province decrease the negative human health and environmental impacts of mining operations on the northern coast of Sulawesi.

This cooperation will be beneficial for the sustainable development of Southeast Sulawesi Province, for many years the erupting trends of minerals mining within the province have become a big challenge for both the government and the academic community. Presented with this challenge, we’ve established the best approach to help the stakeholders find the best sustainable solution. We’ll look forward to sharing and learning together with everyone using our economic tools.
