En Conservación Estratégica (CSF) ayudamos a los conservacionistas locales a utilizar herramientas económicas para que encuentren soluciones inteligentes y eficientes a los problemas ambientales más urgentes. Desde la creación de CSF en 1998, hemos llevado a cabo numerosos proyectos de análisis en bosques, ríos y ambientes costeros. La mayor parte de nuestro trabajo se ha concentrado en los trópicos, donde los niveles de diversidad biológica son extraordinariamente altos. Global Landscape Restoration Reference Tool

In partnership with Conservation International, CSF-Brazil is developing a restoration reference tool, to provide key information on the costs and benefits of successful ecosystem restoration projects in Cambodia, Indonesia, and Peru.

Specifically, the tool will include information about:

  1. Organizations engaged in restoration work in each country, including themes and geographies;
  2. Organizations that have demonstrated success in one or more of 5 restoration pathways: natural regeneration, seed dispersal, agroforestry, planted forests, silvopasture;
  3. Interviews with selected organizations in order to understand and quantify the costs and benefits of their restoration projects;
  4. Specific institutional structures that have impacted the success and/or failure of these restoration initiatives.

After completing the reference tool for Cambodia, Indonesia, and Peru, we hope to expand the reference tool to include information to additional countries. The ultimate goal of this project is to support the implementation of cost-effective restoration initiatives worldwide by providing reliable and easily accessible information.

Background

On March 1, 2019, the UN General Assembly declared 2021- 2030 the “UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration”. The intent is to scale up the restoration of degraded and destroyed ecosystems as a means to protect biodiversity and tackle climate change through carbon sequestration. In order to make restoration commitments a reality, various actors will need a clear understanding of the costs and benefits of different restoration models, as well as the ability to identify key partners working in the field at a national level.

This work follows a similar feasibility study of economically promising forest restoration business models for private investment in southern Amazonas statethat CSF-Brazil completed earlier in 2019, in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF-Brazil).
