28 passionate environmental and development professionals representing 18 different organizations and 8 countries gathered at Conservation International’s headquarters near Washington DC for four days of intensive education on leveraging finance to achieve lasting conservation outcomes around the world.
Taught by Executive Director of the Conservation Finance Alliance, this intensive short course explored the full spectrum of nature finance solutions. Over four days, participants investigate a range of sustainable finance mechanisms and solutions to benefit nature, including: Protected and conserved area finance, blended finance, conservation trust funds, public finance, economic instruments, conservation enterprises, nature investing, and more.
Each day of instruction featured guest speakers from Conservation Strategy Fund’s own team and other lectures from the World Wildlife Fund, Enduring Earth, Conservation International, and more. Participants also work together to complete a final prioritization exercise to help them evaluate the effectiveness of different finance solutions for specific conservation contexts.
By the end of the course, participants left with an understanding of:
- Core nature finance theory and taxonomy, including how to frame conservation finance beyond filling finance gaps
- The current state of finance for nature, including key actors and common funding sources
- The four guidance principles of finance for nature: Optimize resource efficiencies, discourage harmful actions, incentivize positive actions, increase financial capital for conservation
- Seven different classes and categories of nature finance mechanisms
- Practical tools for identifying and prioritizing a portfolio of finance solutions for different landscapes, organizations, and sites
- The tradeoffs among different finance solutions and how to identify the best solutions, given the specific conservation context

"Learning from the amazing guest speakers...was really eye-opening because they came from real cases that I'd be very much inspired to apply." - Yunitha Ratnadilla, 2026 Participant
"For me, the "aha" moment was really more a series of moments where David helped us understand that not all solutions are a fit for all situations and that you have to be very thoughtful in evaluating your circumstances and likely seek expertise and support before making decisions or committing your organization to a particular path." - Zach Hoffman, 2026 Participant
