Infrastructure investments in remote areas can transform landscapes and watersheds, unleashing irreversible, destructive change. Projects' impacts vary considerably and their approval is dependent on small groups of public decision-makers. Investments, especially remote roads, are often economically inefficient and usually have unnecessarily large environmental and social impacts. These characteristics - variable quality, concentrated decision-making, economic flaws and design shortcomings - add up to a big conservation opportunity, one in which good economic analyses can be influential. CSF's Smart Energy + Transportation Infrastructure program provides training to conservationists and decision-makers, as well as comprehensive cost-benefit analyses of infrastructure projects, such as dams and roads. Keen understanding of these projects at multiple levels of society will result in better decisions and large-scale conservation gains.

Biodiversity Understanding in Infrastructure and Landscape Development (BUILD)

Through an agreement with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF) have launched a comprehensive initiative in central Africa, expand CSF’s programs in the Andes-Amazon region, and initiate a limited program in Asia’s Himalayan region. The goal of the program is to promote biodiversity conservation through infrastructure best practices.

Costos y beneficios del proyecto hidroeléctrico del río Inambari

En junio de 2010, los gobiernos de Perú y Brasil firmaron un Acuerdo Energético que prevé que compañías brasileñas construyan en ríos de la Amazonía peruana centrales hidroeléctricas para exportar energía al Brasil. El proyecto hidroeléctrico del río Inambari, con una potencia instalada de 2,200 megavatios, es el primero de cinco posibles proyectos en contar con un Estudio de Factibilidad (EF) realizado por la compañía promotora EGASUR.

MINAM aims to balance environmental protection with infrastructure development

The Peruvian Ministry of the Environment (known by its Spanish acronym, MINAM) is working on a potentially groundbreaking policy to balance environmental protection and the development of big infrastructure projects. Specifically, the agency is formulating an approach to compensating for the impacts construction projects cause to natural ecosystems. Some degree of ecosystem impact is inevitable when new roads and dams are constructed; these damages have typically been overlooked in most countries. The Peruvian government is consulting with a range of stakeholders and experts, including CSF, to devise a policy that will give developers more clarity on their obligations, while creating real benefits for nature protection in the country.

Este programa es financiado por USAID y la Fundación Gordon y Betty Moore a través del programa BUILD (Biodiversity Understanding in Infrastructure and Landscape Development).

Ferramentas Econômicas para a Conservação e Planejamento de Infraestrutura na Amazônia - Formulário de Inscrição

Com o apoio da Agência dos Estados Unidos para o Desenvolvimento Internacional (United States Agency for International Development) e da Fundação Gordon and Betty Moore, a Conservação Estratégica realizou  o curso de Ferramentas Econômicas para a Conservação e Planejamento de Infraestrutura na Região Amazônica, no período de 13 a 24 de agosto de 2012, no Hotel Mestre D’Armas, próximo a Brasília.  Durante essas duas semanas, os participantes aprenderam a usar a economia de forma mais estratégica para planejar e alcançar sucesso em seus esforços de desenvolvimento relacionados à infraestrutura e meio ambiente.

Ecosystem Spotlight: The Albertine Rift

The Albertine Rift is the 920-mile long western area of the East African Rift, covering parts of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania. It runs from the northern end of Lake Albert to the southern end of Lake Tanganyika. Formed over millions of years, the Albertine Rift is the result of two tectonic plates that once collided and are now slowly moving apart. This geologic activity has created some of Africa's tallest mountains and many of the world's deepest lakes. In addition, the unique variation in elevations has contributed to the diversity of habitats that include wetlands, alpine grasslands, lowland and montane forests, and woodland savannas. Within these habitats, one finds everything from active glaciers to volcanoes.
