Evaluating the economic, social and environmental costs of planned road projects in the Amazon Basin

With generous support from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, CSF is working on a project to identify the relative riskiness of planned road projects in terms of economic, social and environmental costs in the Amazon basin, and to engage decision makers to ensure that this analysis is relevant, understood and to the greatest extent possible considered in decision-making processes.

Evaluating the impacts of hydroelectric plants on the Munduruku indigenous people in the Brazilian Amazon

CSF staff conducted a field visit to villages of the Munduruku people in the Brazilian Amazon. These communities have been adversely affected for several years by the construction of the Teles Pires and São Manoel hydropower plants.

Regional Symposium: The Value of Nature

The Regional Symposium: "The Value of Nature", took place in Quito, Ecuador, from the 27th of November to December 1, 2017. The event was held at the Hotel Quito, and included a combination of plenary sessions, training, and interactive sessions on the topic of quantification and valuation of ecosystem services for sustainable development.  Attendees were able to choose from a combination of sessions led by experts from the Natural Capital Project (NatCap) and Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF). For attendees working in coastal and marine contexts, the central themes included the assessment of the risks to habitat and marine protected areas.

Case studies for the development of environmental compensation in Peru

As part of our collaboration with the Environmental Ministry in Peru (MINAM), CSF has finished a series of papers on environmental compensation (biodiversity offsets). We explored 4 infrastructure and extractive projects in Madre de Dios and Loreto, and analyzed how to offset their residual impacts. This work supports MINAM’s development and implementation of technical compensation guidelines, while also generating evidence about methods for designing environmental compensation plans.
